World Glaucoma Week
Glaucoma is a group of diseases which affect the nerve connecting the eye to the brain. The pressure in the eye can become high and cause damage that you would not notice. It is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide. An estimated 4.5million people globally are blind due to glaucoma.
There are no symptoms or warning signs you would notice. Once developed, visual damage is mostly irreversible, and this has led to glaucoma being described as the “silent blinding disease”.
Regular eye tests can help to detect early signs of glaucoma so it can be treated. People with a close family history of glaucoma do have an increased risk of developing it themselves. The NHS will pay for people over 40 with a family history of glaucoma to have a free eye test every year.
